It can be measured in a number of ways. Both, the flow of liquids and gases, can be measured in mass or volumetric flow rates such as kilograms per second or litres per second. If the density of the material is known, these measurements can be performed or converted between two materials.

There are several types of flowmeters available for closed-piping systems. Generally, the instruments are classified as positive displacement, velocity, differential pressure and mass meters. A few differential pressure devices include variable-area meters, pilot tubes, target meters, flow nozzles, venturi tubes, elbow-tap meters and orifices and flow tubes. A few types of positive displacement meters are rotary-vanes, pistons, nutating-disks and oval-gears.
